The importance of a resume is more than one would think, no matter the industry
Building a high quality resume is a crucial aspect to landing a job. Resumes are basically a mini-portfolio that explains your job experience and skillsets. There are three foundational ways to build a resume. You can build it chronologically from your first job to your most recent/current one, functionally by describing your skillsets and knowledge, or a combination of the two. All of these options are viable when making a good resume, though each type works better for different potential jobs. A job that switches into a new career might not want to know about the prior job experience you’ve had, as that may have nothing to do with the new job.
What’s the point of it though? Why bother going through the effort of writing everything like this down when you could make a full portfolio, which is far more impressive. Well, aside from the fact that most jobs actually require a resume, they actually help hiring managers decide if you’re a good candidate. It’s a much more brief, simpler summary of you and what you have to offer at the new job. A full portfolio would take time to assess and analyze, and while it can be far more impressive overall, it’s your resume that will more often than not count as your first impression.
Now, for those who are just starting out and haven’t had job experience. You might wonder where to start with a resume. This would be another ideal scenario for the functional type of resume. Regardless of work, everyone develops skills in their lifetime, and life experience matters just as much, if not more, in a resume. So take a look at some of your finest achievements in life, works your proud of, or even just hobbies that you’ve spent way too much time digging into. You’d be surprised how you can take an inch and take it a mile away.
Until next time,
